Maria Bowen (documentary filmmaker) inspired fifth grade students via Skype to begin the process of developing their own documentary. Topics of discussion included researching, writing, filming and editing a film based on individual student interests. Maria’s personal stories of working as a production executive with a documentary company, her work on the American Masters Series documentaries on PBS, and her experiences filming while traveling to the countries of Georgia and Russia during the downfall of the Soviet Union, gave students insight to the information needed to embark on the creative and technical processes required for filmmaking.
We would also like to thank Maria Bowen for her generous loan and donation of film equipment to the Montauk School to help begin our filmmaking!
Maria shared some of her experiences with documentary filmmaking, citing a juggling festival in Georgia that she covered. Students quickly related to this topic as they are learning to juggle themselves!
